Cultures Connect
Cultures Connect follows our school's five values, the 5 C's: Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication and Citizenship. Each value gets two weeks. Every fortnight we take one of them and show the sayings different cultures use for that same idea. Five values at two weeks each covers a full ten week term, so the site runs alongside what the school already teaches.
The words change and the pictures change. The meaning underneath does not.
Cultures can look very different from the outside. The food, the language, the celebrations. But underneath, a lot of what people value turns out to be shared. This site is here to make that easier to see.
It is a student project, made for the Peacebuilding National Youth Design Challenge run by Young Change Agents. The theme is Bridging Cultural Divides.
Every idiom on this site is checked with at least two adults who speak that language as their first language. If they do not agree that it is natural and commonly used, it does not go up.
This matters because a saying translated word for word is often not a real idiom at all. The whole point of this site is that each culture has its own way of saying something, so the wording has to be the real thing, not a translation.
If you speak one of these languages and something looks wrong, please tell us. You know it better than we do.
